Set in the northeast portion of Northern Ireland, County Down is one of six counties in the country and rests within the historical province of Ulster. Enclosed by the counties of Antrim, Armagh, Louth plus the Irish Sea and Carlingford Lough, County Down contains the most southernmost point and the easternmost point of Northern Ireland plus two prime peninsulas – the Ards Peninsula and Lecale peninsula. The area gains its name from the Irish word dún which means fort and refers to a fort located in the county town of Downpatrick. The strong protestant rebellion and its small force of fighters were unable to secure the region against the Irish army during the Williamite War. The county faced defeat at the battle Break of Dromore and subsequently fell under the Jacobite rule. The county contains a wealth of rolling landscapes and exciting attractions.
