Can you Drive up to Hadrian's Wall?

Based on the assumption that you are driving in from the north or south of Britain, the main road to the Wall's western portion is via the M74 from the north and the M6 from the south. Head westwards on the M6 to reach Carlisle to reach Drybeck Farm, or follow the western extension of Harian's Wall into Mayport. Many drivers prefer to forgo excursions beyond Bowness on the west end of the Wall; however, you are most welcome to venture further if desired.

Visitors can also drive along Hadrian's Wall using the B6318, A69, or the A689 and B6264. There are little to no fuelling stations along the way, so be sure to refuel or take a short journey to the south along the A69 for snacks, fuel and a quick break.

It's been nearly two thousand years since Hadrian’s Wall (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site) was constructed on the orders of emperor Hadrian in AD 122 to defend the Roman province of Britain against potential attackers. Today, the Wall is one of the most well-known Roman monuments in the world, running between Solway Firth in the west to the River Tyne in the east. The complex structure consisted of a stone wall with attached forts, turrets, milecastles, and gateways.

There are many campsites around Hadrian’s Wall, with the warmest of welcomes, pet-friendly pitches, and exceptional natural views. Camping on Hadrian’s Wall is not possible as wild camping is generally discouraged and there are several hilly areas along the wall, including the section from Greenhead to Chollerford. Fret not, as there are several campsites fairly close to the attraction plus many others a little off-route, so be sure to calculate the extra distance when camping.
