Located in the province of Leinster, the County of Kildare is encircled by the counties of Meath, Fingal, South Dublin, Wicklow, Carlow, Laoighis and Offaly. It is the seventh-largest county in Ireland in terms of population and 24th most significant of all of Irelands 32 counties. The county gets its name from the town of Kildare which is an ancient Christian site. The burial mounds on the open plains of the Curragh speak of ancient settlements in the county. During the Norman rule, over a 100 castles, churches and abbeys were constructed in the County Kildare, many of which can be seen today. Kildare was granted county status in 1927.
