The County of Longford rests the Midlands and falls within the province of Leinster. The county is named after the town of Longford which also serves as the county seat. Longford is enclosed by the counties of Leitrim, Cavan, Westmeath, and Roscommon. A large portion of the region falls on the basin of the River Shannon. The lake of Lough Ree makes up a large part of Longford’s western boundary. The county was first known as Anale or Annaly and originally merged with the province of Meath. The county gained shire status in 1586 during the rule of Elizabeth I.
