The county of Mayo stretches out across the province of Connacht in Western Ireland and is enclosed by the counties of Sligo, Roscommon, Galway, and the Atlantic Ocean. The county name stems from the Irish words Contae Mhaigh Eo which means ‘the plain of the yew trees’. The county town is Castlebar however the county earns its name from the village of Mayo which is now known as Mayo Abbey. The county is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the counties of Galway, Roscommon, and Sligo.

Mayo is enclosed by the Wild Atlantic, and there’s many a breath-taking a view over the body of water. The county is also home to the largest island in Ireland – Achill Island – and contains a wealth of attractions for visitors of all ages. Be it food, adventure, history or family fun Mayo has it all!

There are many interesting sites to see. A stop at the historic, 300-year-old Westport House is a must! Visit during a bird of prey demonstration, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see owls and falcons in action. Savour Mayo’s Great Western Greenway on an exciting bike ride or explore the beautiful beaches of Keem Bay. If you’re feeling adventurous go paddleboarding on Achill Island.
