Beaumaris

Beaumaris. Stephen Colebourne

It’s time for a new adventure on our campervan North Wales road trip. We’re diving into the exciting sights and sounds of Beaumaris, a vibrant town on the Isle of Anglesey. Visitors to the beautiful Isle of Anglesey will find the vibrant town of Beaumaris on the east coast, just across the Menai Strait from Penrhyn on the mainland. The town boasts a long and rich history and originally began as a Viking settlement called the Porth y Wygyr or Port of the Vikings.

This Beaumaris campervan road trip guide includes the must-see attractions, the best campervans and campsites for all those who want to visit this scenic town. See the link below to see the complete itinerary for our campervan road trip through North Wales.

Dafarn Rhos Caravan and Camping Site is the place to be if you’re in search of the best beach campsite on Anglesey. The friendly site enjoys an unrivalled position on the golden sand beach of Lligwy.

Beaumaris grew in popularity after King Edward I of England completed his conquest of Wales and began the construction of Beaumaris Castle in 1295. The town got its name from the workers on the castle, who were primarily French and referred to the marshland area as les beaux marais, “the beautiful marshes”.

Why is Beaumaris Famous?

Beaumaris is a beautiful mediaeval town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Renowned for its impressive architecture and exceptional military design courtesy of master stonemason James of St George and particularly its castle, constructed by King Edward I as a part of his campaign to conquer Wales. The town also enjoys a lovely setting, with fantastic vistas over the Menai Strait and Snowdon, attracting visitors who enjoy exploring the town’s historical sites and scenic coastal paths. Beaumaris is a great base for accessing Snowdonia National Park and boasts a rich cultural heritage with abundant architecture, local arts, crafts, and festivals that celebrate Welsh culture.

With storybook looks, friendly locals, fantastic settings and an inimitable atmosphere, your road trip to Beaumaris is bound to be an enjoyable and memorable adventure.

Let’s explore the captivating seaside town of Beaumaris, home to gorgeous Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian architecture. The town has lively cafes, pubs, and restaurants with food to suit every taste, so there’s no fear of running out of options to grab a bite, particularly after a long day of sightseeing.

Many visitors find that campervan hire Brecon offers the perfect flexibility to explore this historic castle and the surrounding Welsh countryside at their own pace. Visitors can walk around the castle’s impressive walls and towers, admiring exciting features like the inner courtyard, and take guided tours to learn more about the fortress. If the weather plays ball, bring a well-stocked hamper and sit on the nearby grass areas for a fine alfresco feast with fantastic vistas of the castle and ocean. Parking is available in the town but can be limited during peak seasons. It’s best to consider a pay-and-display parking near the castle if you visit during the school holidays.

Head to Beaumaris Promenade, a lovely relaxation and recreation spot offering stunning views over Menai Strait and the enclosing area. Often dubbed the Anglesey Riviera, the picturesque Victorian pier is an exciting mix of architecture and an excellent crabbing spot. It was initially opened to the public in 1846 and rebuilt in 1872, and now it offers parking along the pier area. The lower pier allows visitors to thread a crabbing line through to prevent lost bait.

If crabbing isn’t quite your cup of tea, head over to Beaumaris Beach, a lovely stretch of sand that looks out to the North Wales coastline and the Snowdonia Mountain range. Pastel-coloured houses line the shore, and the sandy beach is ideal for relaxing by the ocean. Take a dip on warm days, or stretch out in the golden sunshine and top up your tan.
