Berwyn Mountains

Set your ‘Out of Office’ on, pack your bags, hop in your campervan hire, and head towards the mountains that sit in the shadow of their more famous neighbour: The Berwyn Mountain Range. We’re starting our Mid Wales campervan road trip in style, exploring this remote and rugged mountain range, the first stop of our road trip itinerary. The Berwyn range is often overlooked as holidaymakers follow the more major roads to more familiar attractions like Llangollen or Snowdonia. Use this guide to plan a Mid Wales itinerary that works best for you and your holiday duration. Without further ado, let’s dive into the attractions and activities to explore on a campervan road trip through the Berwyn Mountains.

Wild and remote the Berwyn Mountains comprise an unspoiled landscape perfect for anyone who prizes solitude and natural beauty, paired with near-empty landscapes owing to its more famous neighbour, Snowdonia. A less crowded and yet equally, if not more, beautiful terrain makes it a delight for our readers who enjoy the feel of being away from all the crowds.

Tynant Faerdref Camping Site rests within the green Dee valley at the base of Berwyn Mountains, bounded by spectacular backdrops and an excellent location in picturesque village of Llandrillo.

Look forward to peaceful hikes, unplanned yet pleasant adventures, and flourishing flora plus fauna, like black grouse and hen harriers. We’ll take hikes to the summit of Cadair Berwyn, marvel at sweeping views of the Welsh countryside, and perhaps even dive into mysteries like the Berwyn Mountain UFO incident in 1974! Let’s start exploring.

Where Are The Berwyn Mountains?

The Berwyn Mountains are in North Wales, straddling the border between Denbighshire, Powys, and Wrexham. The mountain range lies to the east of Snowdonia National Park and the south of Dee Valley, offering adventurous types a hidden gem for our readers seeking quieter, more secluded hiking experiences. The closest towns are Llangollen, Bala, and Oswestry, which serve as a gateway to the mountain range.

What is The Highest Peak in the Berwyn Mountains?

Cadair Berwyn

Cadair Berwyn. John Clift

The highest peak in the Berwyn Mountains is Cadair Berwyn, which reaches 832 metres (2,730 feet) and boasts panoramic views of the surrounding Welsh countryside. Unsurprisingly, this fine peak is a popular destination for hikers. Cadair Bronwen (784 metres) is another notable peak, adding to the area's beauty while offering a challenge for hikers as well.

Reaching the area is an adventure itself. There are several approaches, but for most travellers the route involves leaving the A5 and following the route west towards the Welsh hills, and a quirklily named village, Knockin, with a convenience store called the ‘ The Knockin Shop.’ You’ll know you’re close to the Berwyn Mountains, when the place names become increasingly difficult to read. The snaking roads gradually get smaller and less crowded as you enter Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant. You will see signs of the glittering waterfall, lush countryside and imposing peaks peeping through the foliage.

Berwyn Mountains Road Trip Itinerary

Follow our campervan road trip itinerary for the Berwyn Mountains, taking in such locations as Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall and Cadair Bronwen.

The highest peak in the range, Cadair Berwyn, is a popular area for adventurers who don’t mind a challenging hike rewarded with panoramic views of North Wales. The most popular activity is hiking to the summit, and there are several routes, including the hike to the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall, which is particularly scenic. The trail winds through serene valleys, rolling hills and rugged paths with spectacular views. Watch for wildlife as you hike, scarce birds like black grouse, hen harriers, and red kites. Our readers can also add a stop before or after the hike, including the stunning Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall, one of the tallest in Wales. It is a highly photogenic location and a relaxing break before or after your hike. Take a few snacks as a reward for reaching the summit, and sit down for a quick bite whilst admiring the panoramic views. The central car park for the hike is at the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall.

You’ll hear the thundering Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall before you see it, cascading from four metres or 244 feet, presenting visitors with an impressive attraction to admire. Car park charges are usually £5.00 for the day during the week and £10.00 at the weekend, located a short stroll from the falls. Follow a bridge to soak in fantastic views of the waterfall, and perhaps hop into the pool at the end of the waterfall for a memorable dip. A short, steep climb to the top of the falls boasts fantastic views down the valley. If you enjoy wild swimming, this is a great place for you. There's a small car park at the base of the waterfall, near a café, providing effortless access to the falls plus the surrounding walking trails.

The Berwyn Mountain Ridge has some of the most scenic and remote ridge walks in North Wales. The most popular is the Cadair Berwyn Ridge Walk, starting from Pistyll Rhaeadr or Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and following Cadair Berwyn, Cadair Bronwen, and Moel Sych. The walk provides jaw-dropping views across the Welsh countryside and is perfect for a full day of hiking. The Milltir Cerrig to Cadair Berwyn walk is another popular route. It starts from the Milltir Cerrig car park and cuts across vast moorland up to the ridge that leads to Cadair Berwyn. It is a less frequented path, yet offers equally stunning vistas while offering a more peaceful camping experience.

The Cwm Maen Gwynedd Circular starts at the Cwm Maen Gwynedd car park and snakes past the southern ridges of Berwyns, passing through remote valleys and overexposed ridges, creating an excellent walk for longer, scenic routes. If you prefer a shorter hike, why not tackle the ridge and walk up Cadair Bronwen? Start from Llandrillo and gradually ascent through the moorland to reach the ridge, offering stunning vistas. These walks vary in difficulty but are well-worth an attempt for gorgeous views, tranquillity, and one of the most intimate means of getting acquainted with the surrounding landscape.

The small, family-run Tytandderwen Caravan Park is a peaceful touring and camping site enclosed by beautiful mountains and the glittering rive of Bala.

A famous UFO sighting in 1974 christened the mountains as the ‘New Roswell Incident’, with varied explanations failing to explain the cause of a loud noise and a bright light in the sky. Declassified documents from the Ministry of Defense state the noise and bright light were the result of an earthquake and sightings of a meteor over Wales and Northern England.

Stop for a bite to eat or perhaps kick off a walk or hike at the charming village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, often a starting point for hikes in the Berwyns. Wander through the streets to admire traditional Welsh architecture, stop for a pint at a cosy pub, and restock on camping essentials at the local shops, all while embracing the laidback, unhurried pace of rural life. We recommend exploring St. Dogfan’s Church, a gorgeous mediaeval church, with a peaceful churchyard.

The Berwyns are quieter than nearby Snowdonia, creating a natural haven for wildlife and rare bird species such as the black grouse, hen harriers, and red kites. Our birdwatching enthusiasts can explore rich opportunities to observe these species (and more) in their natural habitat.

Mountain biking fans can explore a range of outstanding trails. The rugged terrain offers a blend of challenging routes and scenic beauty for cyclists who love off-road adventures. While it may not compete with the mountain biking routes in nearby Snowdonia, they are still worth a try.

Set a five-minute walk away from the market town of Bala, Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park is the ideal base for a wealth of outdoor activities.

Specific trails in the Berwyns are ideal for readers who enjoy clip-clopping through lush scenery in the saddle. Several excellent stables are also available for horse riders keen to explore the vast open spaces and ridgelines, soaking in scenery at every turn.

Last, but not least, the Berwyns brim with excellent camping options for all ages and tastes, with peaceful, secluded spots to pitch a tent or park a campervan under the stars. We’ll explore a range of fab camping locations and campsites in the Berwyn Mountains below.
