First off, tucked in the Tywi Valley, Carmarthen brims with laid back charm. We delve into the folklore and vibrant history of Carmarthen, a town prized by the Romans, Normans, and the English for its strategic location. We uncover a deep and wild part of Wales, steeped in history, starting our road trip off in style. Today, the winding streets may seem like a maze to unfamiliar guests. However, Carmarthen offers numerous town walks with helpful signposts for walkers and sightseers. If you’re driving in from London, you’ve likely spent around four hours in your campervan or motorhome, and our first stop is a welcome opportunity to stretch your legs. Explore the gift shops and select a few kooky items to take home. Stop for a quick bite at Y Barbican café, a friendly spot with cosy décor, a pleasant atmosphere, and scrumptious food, or walk past Georgian houses with purple, blue, and pink hues. With two romantic hilltop castles, a medieval deer park, and a lovely position on the River Tywi, Carmarthen is a joy to explore on your road trip. Campervan and motorhome owners can also explore the town via the Wild Drovers’ Way along the Llanwenog route.

Part 2: Tenby

Tenby Harbour, Tenby. Beata Mitręga
Our second stop takes us to Tenby, home to iconic views and a spectacular location on the Pembrokeshire coast, which happens to be the only coastal national park in Britain. The resort is as popular as in the 18th and 19th centuries. It offers camping sorts and a wonderful playground comprising the coast, countryside, wide open spaces, and friendly towns, ideal for expending energy as one sees fit. There are three beautiful beaches, with Castle Beach winning the best in Britain 2019 by the Times. The narrow town streets are lined with many shops, pubs, cafes, and restaurants, with guided tours offering themed walks through the town. Take the scenic route from Newton southwards to enjoy the best views in your campervan or motorhome. Hop on the A489 and the A470 to get through Bluith for a leisurely drive and quality vistas, including sheer mountainsides and red kites flying overhead near Rhayader. Take boat trips to see seals or visit the holy island of Caldey, inhabited by Cistercian monks. Take a look at our Tenby section for more details.
