As the oldest town in Wales and a significant Roman sea fort, it’s no surprise that Carmarthen held significance as a prominent administrative and commercial centre for Wales for many centuries. Its important strategic location has been attacked and conquered through the centuries, creating rich local history.

The town is also renowned for its connection with legendary figures from Welsh mythology, including Merlin the wizard, who is said to have been born nearby at Carmarthen. The town is also well-loved for its picturesque setting within the glorious Welsh countryside, making it a popular destination for visitors seeking historical intrigue and natural beauty.

At the heart of Carmarthen lies the majestic ruins of Carmarthen Castle, a medieval fortress and a formidable symbol of power and prestige. Another must-see is St. Peter's Church, with its imposing spire that offers a glimpse into centuries of religious heritage and architectural splendour. Take a breather with a leisurely stroll through Carmarthen Park, and unwind amidst lush greenery and scenic vistas. Carmarthenshire County Museum provides insight into the region's cultural heritage through its diverse exhibits, and makes for a great day out with the kids on a rainy day. Foodies can taste local flavours at the bustling Carmarthen Market, famed for presenting a feast for the senses with fresh produce, artisanal crafts, and traditional Welsh fare.

The turbulent history of Carmarthen Castle alone warrants a visit to a town that has been conquered by the Romans and the Normans, who envied its strategic position and port. The town is first mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary, a register of stations and distances along roads in Roman Britain, and holds one of the last surviving Roman amphitheatres in Britain, which also happens to be the most westerly amphitheatre in the Roman empire.

King William II constructed a castle in the town during 1094 and made the region his administrative centre. Carmarthen Castle was attacked and rebuilt many times, with its most famous conqueror being Owain Glyndŵr in 1405. The castle was last in use as a stronghold and a prison during the English Civil War. Just like the town Carmarthen Castle has seen generations of change, and promises enchanting tales to all who dive into its rich history.

The Black Book of Carmarthen, written in a priory in the town is the earliest surviving manuscript written entirely in Welsh with poems that include both Arthur and Merlin. According to local legend Merlin was born in a cave outside Carmarthen, and a local oak that once stood in the town was referred to as Merlin’s Oak.
