Welcome to stop number two on our campervan road trip itinerary through Mid Wales and we’re off on a new adventure. Pack up at your campsite and wave goodbye to the Berwyn Mountains as we head to Hafod Estate a densely wooded estate in the Ystwyth valley of Ceredigion.

Hafod Estate is a prime example of a beautiful landscape that whispers of bygone eras while celebrating the stunning beauty of nature. Initially developed in the late 18th century by Thomas Johnes, the estate was envisioned as a peaceful and green landscape. Our comprehensive guide to a campervan road trip in Hafod Estate will give you all the information you need to enjoy this historic estate. Set in its scenic pastoral setting, it includes ancient woodlands, diverse plant species, and habitats that support a wide array of wildlife.

Hafod Estate Road Trip Itinerary

Hafod Estate

Hafod Estate

Here are some of the things you can do when visiting the Hafod estate on your road trip. Start by exploring the five scenic walks of varying lengths and terrain. Explore an ever-changing sequence of views, with beautiful waterfalls, mossy glades, scenic woodlands, and dramatic views over the glittering River Ystwyth that runs through the site. The Lady's Walk and Ystwyth Gorge Walk wind under the speckled shade of lush woodland. Gorge Walk is worth exploring and features a breathtaking rope suspension bridge with a neo-gothic arch positioned at an elevated position. The arch was constructed in the late 18th century and once marked the entrance to the estate while providing gorgeous vistas over the landscape.

The Coed Hafod Walk cuts across ancient Oakland with enchanting views over the river. At the same time, the Cavern Cascade Walk includes a route past a cascading waterfall and remains of Johnes' artificial cave.

Jump in your campervan hire and visit Mrs Johnes' Flower Garden tucked in the heart of the estate. The garden, once lost to a forestry plantation, was restored by the Hafod Trust with a selection of plants that reflect the type of flora that Mrs Johnes’ would have originally planted in the gardens. Marianne's Garden, a tranquil garden haven built for the daughter, rests tucked in a rocky outcrop.

Visit the church next to the car park, which stands as a landmark within the estate. It was constructed by Thomas Johnes in 1803 and is the only surviving structure from that era.

Morfa Bychan Holiday Park is a fantastic, clifftop site affording sweeping sea views towards the beautiful Cardigan Bay and enjoys a prime position just fifteen minutes from a range of townie amenities in Aberystwyth.

Keep an eye out for a wealth of wildlife by the river, including otters, kingfishers, wagtails, and dippers. Bring your field glasses to watch birds of prey gliding above the trees, like goshawks and buzzards. The elusive pine marten can also be spotted rustling through the woodlands. Hafod is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), brimming with rich biodiversity and sprawling meadows that are home to a range of fungi.

Bring a well-stocked hamper and find a quiet, shady riverside spot where you can relax, enjoy a well-earned post-walk meal, and unwind to the peaceful sounds of flowing water while soaking in views of the surrounding hills. Fall in love with this tranquil escape for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and photographers, blending acres of beauty and a rich cultural past.
