Is it safe to swim in Coniston?

    Laurel and Hardy Museum

    Laurel and Hardy Museum. Stan_39440

Absolutely! Coniston Water is a safe space for cold water swimming and there are three areas that have been designated as safe wild swimming spots by the government. Coniston Brown Howe, Coniston Boating Centre and Monk Coniston are the officially recognized areas and the quality of the water in these sites are regularly monitored from the 15th of May to the 30th of September. The Monk Coniston Car Park (LA21 8AA) is one of the more popular spots for accessing the lake.

The sheltered northern end of the Coniston Water is popular with swimmers owing to a lack of boat traffic. There is easy access around much of the lake and families often prefer the east side of the lake, which is more shallow than the western side. Swimmers are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, and requested to wear brightly coloured swimming caps plus tow floats.

Walking country is at your disposal at Tarn Foot Farm Campsite. This hidden basic campsite accepts tents only and sits near Loughrigg Tarn, under Loughrigg Fell. A lovely wild swimming spot is nearby, and pets are most welcome to tag along.

Coniston is popular yet often proves to be less frantic than the other lakes, often exuding tranquillity during the quieter moments of the day. There’s plenty to explore on foot, and an excellent lakeside cafe, which is perfect for anyone keen to explore the area on land. Parking is available in the centre of the village, and there are plenty of pleasant walks to and by the glimmering lake. If you’d like to remain dry while exploring the lake, hop on the steam gondola, which is perhaps the most iconic way to soak in the views from a different angle.
