Is Portreath Beach Safe to Swim?

Portreath. Jeff Leung
Portreath Beach is a hotspot with both locals and visitors, famed for its excellent surf swells and flat golden sand beach. Portreath, meaning 'Sandy Cove’ or ‘Beach Cove’ has a lovely harbour right next to the beach, which is an unusual sight on the north Cornish coast.
The beach is a safe space for swimming, granted that proper precautions are taken. Pay attention to the weather reports, and do not take to the water if you are unsure of the currents. In summer, popular beaches like Portreath have lifeguards, and a flag system denotes the safest areas for swimming on the beach. The beach also has several safety and rescue equipment points with lifeguards manning the stretch of coastline from the last week of May to the end of September. Unfortunately, pets are not permitted on the beach from the 1st of July to the 31st of August, so ask your campsite in Portreath if arrangements can be made to hold your canine companion during your visit. The Western Cove is best left to experienced snorkelers who are familiar with the local tides and weather conditions.
Access the beach via the car park next to the ocean. A short set of steps lead directly to the beach via the car park, and level access from the road is best for wheelchair users. Visitors also have access to roadside parking without restrictions, a short stroll from the ocean.
Hillcrest Views Campsite is a back to basics site set out on a working farm, in the picturesque village of Illogan. The working farm provides outdoorsy types with easy access to a range of stunning beaches, scenic cross country footpaths, a watersports lake, Trampoline Park and a golf course.
Where is Portreath Beach
To access Portreath from Redruth take the B3300 signposted to Portreath, which is around 5.5 km away. Guests can also access the beach via the B3301 from the A30 at Hayle, and follow a scenic route along the coast road. Campers who do not require camping can head in through Smugglers Cove if preferred.
