Is it Safe to Swim in Grasmere?

Grasmere Lake, named after the village it rests next to, is a smaller lake within the Lake District where wild swimming is encouraged. Add this lovely spot on your Lake District itinerary, and start your day with a bracing swim from a lovely location almost right in the middle of the National Park. The river is hard to miss owing to its position on the A591, and a peaceful swim is a given as powered water vehicles are not permitted on the lake. The lake’s smaller islands are off limits to tourists, so be sure to limit your water-based antics away from these areas. Be sure to tune into the weather forecast, stay close to shore, and let a trusted source know your plans for swimming, as the lake is not mentored by lifeguards, nor does it have amenities for swimmers. The lake is a fab spot for paddleboarders too, however large and commercial groups will require a permit to enter the water.
How Deep is Grasmere?
Grasmere Lake has a maximum depth of approximately 70 feet. This depth can vary depending on the specific location within the lake. It is one of the smaller lakes in the Lake District, yet still provides a picturesque setting with its still, clear waters and amazing views of the surrounding fells.

Short Hikes in Grasmere

Grasmere is a great starting point for relatively easy hikes. It has quick access to the surrounding fells and lake and plenty of freedom to move around without your van or car. Parking can sometimes be tricky, especially if you're visiting a popular spot during the peak months, so it's always nice to leave your vehicle at the campsite and travel light.
The family can follow the Lakeshore Loop, which covers four miles on mostly flat terrain. Start at the village centre and follow Red Bank down to the water. Enjoy stunning lake views before following the pathway at the gateway with a signpost National Trust Grasmere Lakeshore. The route will follow the perimeter of Grasmere and a bridge across the River Rothay before returning to the village. The hike to Easedale Tarn is a longer and more challenging route, following Easedale Road to the northwest of the village and crossing the stone bridge over the River Rothay. The route follows the river before winding past thundering waterfalls and empty heathland, concluding at Easedale Tarn. if you’re here to put minimum effort and enjoy some truly spectacular views,catch the sunset from Helm Crag. The walk takes just over 3 km and enjoys sweeping views over Grasmere, and while the walking path is not too taxing, it does involve some uphill climbing. The Rydal Caves are also worth a visit, and they are a short walk from the village, or a quicker 8 minute drive away, followed by a 15 minute stroll.
Chase waterfalls at Rydal Grot, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in England that has a lovely wooden seat looking across a glittering waterfall and an idyllic emerald pool. The stone hut is free to all guests and sits a quick 5-minute stroll from the parking lot next to Rydal Mount. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, take a dip at Sour Milk Ghyll, a beautiful stream ideal for wild swimming, and one of the warmest bodies of water in the lakes owing to its unsheltered position in the sun.
