Campervan Hire Bristol

Bristol the largest city, Ceremonial County and a unitary authority located in South West England. The county gains its name from the Old English name of Brycgstow which translates to place at the bridge owing to the hill forts and Roman villas which were erected at the junction of the rivers Frome and Avon during the Iron Age. By the year 1607, the county possessed one of the strongest Norman castles and was a fortified burgh. The county gained a royal charter in 1155, and due to its position in the middle of the counties of Somerset and Gloucestershire, Bristol was once politically administered by both counties during various periods in history. The city became a county in 1373.

The county erected a harbour in 1247, and during the reign of Edward III, the city imported raw wool from Ireland and manufactured woollen cloth and traded with Spain and Portugal for port wine and sherry. The port served as the second largest trade connection between England and Ireland. At the turn of the 16th century, the region was a manufacturing town and played a significant role in maritime history.

Today Bristol prospers as a prosperous city and regularly captures titles like the UK’s best place to live (2017), the best place to study, one of the five most inspiring cities and was even voted one of the top 10 cities in the world.
