The county fought against the invasion of Edward I under the Llewellyns. The Normans could not infiltrate inward despite the establishment of castles in Caernarfon and Conwy, which helped Gwynedd maintain a firm hold on Welsh culture.

The county terrain within the county comprises of string rock shaped by Ice age glaciers and contains a sizeable portion of Snowdonia National Park. North of the mountains lies a famed tourist destination- Lleyn Peninsula. The remains of prehistoric stone circles, dolmens, and standing stones imply human settlements in the region during the early ages.
