Campervan Hire Wigtonshire

The County of Wigtown or Wigtownshire is a historical and registration county in south-west Scotland. The county faces the Irish Sea and forms the western portion of Galloway.

Remains of lake houses and hill forts speak for the Iron Age settlements in the region. Around the 6th century, Wigtownshire formed part of the Kingdom of Strathclyde until the territory fell under the invasions of the enclosing tribes of Scots from Ireland and Anglo-Saxons from the kingdom of Northumbria. The Norse invaders followed in the 9th century, and subsequently, Wigtownshire formed part of Galloway that covered a large portion of southwestern Scotland.

The shire consists primarily of moorland and the county borders the counties of Ayrshire and Stewartry of Kirkcudbright while Solway Firth rests to the south of Wigtownshire. The county town of Wigtown rests at the top of Wigtown Bay and contains an extensive collection of second-hand bookstores. If you drop by during September, you’ll see the annual Scottish Book Town Festival in full swing!
